What can we say about Caipirinhas? They are one of the most recognized Brazilian drinks in the world. But what is the story behind this adored drink? Well, there are dozens of versions, one of them states th
at it was used as a medicine during the spanish flu in Säo Paulo. According to this version, Caipirinha (which is how you call someone that comes from the countryside in Portuguese) was created by a farmer and it was given to his sick employers.
Another version is that Capirinha was invented in Paraty, a historical city in the Rio de Janeiro state, and it was also used as an alternative for the water (!!) because of a Cólera.
Nowadays Caipirinhas are so famous that they are registered as a Brazilian Cultural Heritage. There are millions of versions or variations, but a drink is only considered a Caipirinha when you use only Cachaça, lime and sugar. If you use any other fruit or distilled drink, then it's a drink inspired by caipirinha.
The lime is the one small and green. In Germany it's called Limette. Also, the quality of the Cachaça matters, but I know it's difficult to find a good one here in Germany. A good option that I saw here is Nega Fulo. You can find them at Rewe. (https://shop.rewe.de/p/cachaca-nega-fulo-aguardente-de-cana-0-7l/2969530).
Ingredients
50 ml of cachaça
1/2 lime (cut in two slices)
2 tsp of sugar
Ice
Instructions
Crush the lemon and sugar inside the cup (careful, if you crush too much, the lemon releases more bitterness than it needs).
Put the ice cubes and complete with the cachaça.
Mix it well and decorate with a slice of lemon.
