Ebbelwoi

A drink that every Hesse knows and is beloved especially in Frankfurt, is German apple cider called “Apfelwein”. People from Hesse have a lot of different names for it though:

  • Ebbelwoi

  • Ebbelwei

  • Äbbelwoi

  • Schoppe

  • Stöffchen

  • Äppler

  • and more

It is basically the national drink of Frankfurt and has been for 250 years. This year, in 2022, it was actually announced as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

You drink Ebbelwoi from a special glass, called “Geripptes” which is covered by a distinct diamond pattern and the wine itself is poured from a grey stone stein with a blue pattern called “Bembel”.

There are multiple ways to drink you Ebbelwoi:

  1. neat (which is the way the real Hessians drink it)

  2. “Gespritzt” which is mixed with sparkling water (great for starters)

  3. “Süßgespritzt” which is mixed with lemonade but you can’t order this in a lot of places because real “Ebbelwoi” fans and bars will refuse to serve you such an atrocity.

  4. “Äppler Cola” which is mixed with coke but as the last version, this one isn’t very popular amongst die hard “Ebbelwoi” drinkers. It is more popular amongst the youth though and you are even able to buy it pre-mixed in cans.

If you are in or around Frankfurt, you’re better off sticking to the first two options though!

Prost!
