Italy is the womb of the Roman Empire, opera music, Cristoforo Colombo, Catholicism and yet the thing that is associated with it the most all over the world is its food. Is it maybe because our traditions in the kitchen are actually what the discoverer of America and Giuseppe Verdi had in common? Or, even more important, because it connects the Italians of the 21st century to them?
The same reason that brought the Romans near the edge of the Tiber River is the one responsible for our country's unique taste. The Peninsula's typical morphology and favorable climate created an incredible variety of agricultural products that inspired generations of cooks. Moreover, the country's geographical diversity enabled every region to develop typical gastronomy of its own. They can be extremely different, especially from north to south.
But it's not only about the traditional dishes, to every Italian gathering family together around the kitchen table is where the relevance of food truly relies on. Food is the oil and the spice of our relationships.
